Mark Burry

Prof., Architect
Gaudí's still unfinished Sagrada Família Basilica is a building for our time despite it having commenced in 1882, and the original architect having died in 1926 with only the apse wall and one set of transept towers completed.  The basilica is not scheduled for completion until 2026, the centenary of Gaudí's death.  Mark Burry’s presentation will be in three parts.

Firstly, he will explain Gaudí's use of a design schema to ensure a viable pathway to completion for the building following his vision but beyond his actual leadership. Secondly, he will explain how Gaudí's working style anticipated almost all the technological advances of our time, and how these technologies are being put to use on site today.  Thirdly, he will discuss the implications of all that is being learned on-site as a consequence of meeting the challenges of completing Gaudí's magnum opus.  These lessons point to more efficient and creative building production meeting the aspirations of design professionals with innovative approaches to global urban futures that go well beyond the immediate needs of the Sagrada Família Basilica as a ‘work in progress’.
